Le Dr Sambo, Directeur régional de l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS) pour l'Afrique, explique dans un communiqué que la drépanocytose est une maladie génétique qui rend les globules rouges rigides, collants, falciformes, et donc fragiles et facilement destructibles.
Ceci provoque des blocages et prive des organes vitaux de sang et d'oxygène, ce qui aboutit à des épisodes récurrents de douleurs sévères, d'anémie et d'infections graves.
Le Dr Sambo ajoute qu'il n'existe actuellement aucun traitement bien établi contre la drépanocytose, mais que «des programmes complets de lutte axés sur la prévention, le traitement et le soutien peuvent permettre d'améliorer aussi bien la qualité de vie que l'espérance de vie des personnes touchées».
